The amazing and spectacular Athabasca Sand Dunes are only a eighteen mile boat ride from Lake Athabasca Lodge across the lake and is well worth the trip. The Athabasca Sand Dunes are located along the south shore of Lake Athabasca and run for about 60 miles reaching as high as 100 feet in some areas. The Athabasca Sand Dunes are the most northerly major sand field in the world. Constantly moving, they slowly smother forest in some areas and uncover stands of previously covered forest in others. There are over 50 rare plant species found in the area, 10 of which are found nowhere else on earth. This fragile landscape is protected by the Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Wilderness Park. |
